Pigtown (Washington Village): homes near Camden Station
Pigtown, also called Washington Village, is a Southwest Baltimore rowhome neighborhood that grew up beside the B&O Railroad in the 1830s, a short walk from Camden Station.
Where Pigtown (Washington Village) is
The neighborhood runs from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on the east to Monroe Street on the west, and from West Pratt Street south to Russell Street.[1]
B&O rail service began on West Pratt Street on May 22, 1830, and the first houses here went up in 1833.[1]
Housing stock
The stock is Federal, Greek Revival and Italianate rowhouses. The Pigtown Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 28, 2006.[1]
In houses this old we always pull the permit history: past renovations done without permits are the most common surprise on a 19th-century city rowhome, followed by the sewer line and the rear wall.
Getting around
- Camden Station, at the eastern edge, serves the MARC Camden Line and Light Rail. Weekday Camden Line trains to Washington Union Station take about 59 to 74 minutes.[2][3]
- The Stadium/Federal Hill Light Rail stop next to M&T Bank Stadium (still "Hamburg Street" in MTA schedule data) also serves the neighborhood.[4][5]
- I-95 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway are close by, and CityLink Yellow runs along Washington Boulevard.[2]
Before you buy or rent here
- Every rental that is not owner-occupied, including a single rowhome, needs a Baltimore City rental license as well as yearly property registration. The license takes a passing inspection by a Maryland-licensed home inspector registered with the city (or a passing Section 8 inspection) plus the lead certificate number for each unit.[6][7][8]
- Since January 1, 2026, city rental licenses last two years and do not transfer when a home is sold. A buyer who keeps a rental needs a new license within 60 days, and the license number has to appear on the lease and in ads.[9]
- A deed can't be recorded in the city without a lien certificate. It costs $55, takes about seven business days and is generally good for 45 days, and any open liens on it have to be paid in full before the transfer records.[10][11]
- City homebuyer incentives (Buying Into Baltimore, Live Near Your Work, Vacants to Value Booster, the First-Time Homebuyers Incentive) need a homebuyer class and at least $1,000 of your own money, and you apply at least 30 days before settlement. Funding is first come, first served; all five were still open on October 19, 2026.[12]
Public schools: Baltimore City Public Schools. Check any address with the city's school enrollment guide, which links the City Schools zoned-school locator.
Parks and landmarks
- The B&O Railroad Museum at 901 W Pratt St opened on July 4, 1953. Its 1884 roundhouse is a National Historic Landmark.[13]
- Carroll Park, about 117 acres, was bought by the city in 1890. Mount Clare, the house inside it, was built around 1757-1767 and is a National Historic Landmark.[14][15]
- The Gwynns Falls Trail passes through Carroll Park on its way from the Inner Harbor to Leakin Park.[16]
